1971 Gibson Les Paul Black Beauty, a blazing fast tone demon with mojo galore, which helped knock out 2 gold Porno for Pyros records. Was used to write and record many Porno for Pyros songs. It was used live from the very first appearance in a packed, dark and smoke filled Hollywood Palladium in 1992 until the very last gig, at 14 Below in Santa Monica in 1997. The only other electric guitars he used with any regularity during these epic times were his Floyd Rose 1979 Strat, and 1987 Gibson EDS1275 double neck SG. In addition, Pete used this Les Paul sporadically for special occasions, parties, solo gigs, Hellride gigs, and recording until 2015.

PROMINENCE
This LP indeed has awesome history, but otherwise it's quite simply one of those badass-as-hell old Les Pauls, it's one of the good ones, it's a magical Les Paul. This one's been played in front of a couple million fans, it's been used on stage at every Porno for Pyros show, and it's been used by Pete on stage as a guest with Jane's Addiction. This is the main Porno for Pyros guitar. This Black Beauty from Kalamazoo was used to write and record two gold records, was used at every show from Castaic Lake to Tijuana to Woodstock, the Pets video, Larry Sanders show & Jools Holland. This guitar has heard the screams, wails, it's covered in that intangible mojo swank, all that smoke, all those vibes, and most certainly blood, sweat and tears. All those screaming fans. No one had louder fans in that era in Los Angeles. All of Perry's wails, Perkins' thunder, every gig - all those sounds and vibes have all resonated in this mahogany, ebony & maple.  Perry was at the absolute height of his singing ability during this era and the gigs were insane, powerful, unforgettable.

THE GUITAR
Why else is this guitar special? I've spent quite some time with it, and compared it to others - It's a screaming fast tone beast. It destroys higher priced high end modern Les Pauls. Blows them out of the water.

This is that epic, classic sound. It's has that magic "plays itself" playability of fine 50's or 60's Les Pauls. To whomever ends up with this rarified piece of history, you are one lucky person. I guarantee complete and utter satisfaction on every possible level. I have sold over $2MIL in musical gear since 1999 on eBay, I only deal in high caliber player grade instruments (I'm not a collector, I'm just a player), and I guarantee that this is one of the good ones. I almost never deal in run-of-the-mill guitars or average guitars. This is an incredible playing Les Paul.

Every single hand made Les Paul produced by Gibson in 1971 was different. All those guitars have a unique feel, different tones, different weights, different people building them, wood from different trees. No two are the same. It's astonishing really, just how different two "identical" guitars produced in a factory on the same day can sound and feel. All I can say is you will not be disappointed with the feel of this guitar, the string bends are magical. If you can't tell I'm pretty damn envious of whoever ends up this this thing. It comes with a hand written note in a hand written envelope directly from Peter Distefano, in a modern Gibson Les Paul hardshell case.

HISTORY
Per his foggy memory - Pete bought the guitar via a Recycler ad around 1984-1986 for approx. $600-800 around the age of 19-20. This was during the Van Halen era, and he of course changed the lackluster, brittle original bridge T-TOP humbucker for a screaming high output Dimarzio humbucker.  So the bridge pickup in the guitar today has been there since the beginning with Pete, and is the sound of the first Porno for Pyros record, all those blazing leads and rhythm parts. Sounds phenomenal. Until 2015 Pete has always been under the impression that this guitar was a 1968. For years he thought he was sitting on a rare and very expensive 1968, but alas. Needless to say, it doesn't make this modestly priced 1971 era guitar any less special. This guitar oozes enchanted Los Angeles porno slime, it's the real deal Holyfield.

PRICE
The last one of these early 70's Black Beauties I had on here sold for $4000 and it wasn't half the guitar this one is. I don't say this flippantly. I've owned a lot of 1970's Les Pauls. They are pretty much my all time favorite guitars, when I can find good ones. I like 1970's guitars and have owned a lot of Les Paul Standards and Deluxes. Gibson was very inconsistent in that decade. Some are 15lbs and some are 9lbs. I have seen incredibly light ones and we all know about the boat anchor 15lb Les Pauls from the 70s. Some people absolutely prefer the heavier ones. The truth is there are 70's Les Pauls that play & sound as good as they did in the 50s/60s, and there are ones that are complete duds.  This is one of the good ones. You will see Black Beauty reissues and modern custom shop guitars for much higher prices. Those guitars are overpriced machine made factory guitars that will lose value, they lack character and all the tangible as well as intangible elements which make a truly great playing instrument.

DETAILS
The original tuners were swapped out decades ago. Original bridge pickup is ancient history. Pete also installed a coil tap switch by the knobs which works on the Dimarzio bridge humbucker to allow for single coil tone. The neck pickup sounds like a holy grail T-TOP neck pickup, but it's also just the guitar itself.  The guitar has classic vintage Les Paul resonance. But damn, the neck pickup is like holy. Guitar has wonderful yellow aging which makes it look older than it is, which is beautiful. Has wonderful dings and scratches. Has no ugliness or bad scars. Has only great aging and battle scars.  A very small side "chip" of the headstock wood was re-glued, this was a cosmetic sort of thing, not a structural break, and is small. There are no traditional headstock or neck breaks or repairs. This guitar has traveled very many miles. Pete says that piece chipped during a stage dive. It's very minor and in my opinion only adds character, being that this guitar is "player-grade" instrument. About 5 years ago he installed a Bigsby as you can see in the "Perrypalooza" videos at the Mirage in Vegas, but it has since been removed. I remember talking to Pete before that performance (with Billy Idol) and my jaw dropped when he told me about the Bigsby installation. Anyways, it's back to it's original glory. and looks tight as hell with just the right patina. The Bigsby holes were filled seamlessly by a professional luthier and you'd never know they were there. This is a very, very playable guitar and I'd say the overriding characteristic is fast-ness, it's a screaming fast lead machine. It's surprisingly fast and your fingers just kind of bounce into all the right places. It's one of those. Refretted with 6105 size fret wire, tall medium width, "medium jumbo", just perfect. Strap knobs changed (as always with Pete) to modern locking.
